The Detroit story
Chris Savino was born and raised in Royal Oak, the inner-ring suburb north of Detroit, and graduated from its Dondero High School. He went into animation in the 1990s, working as a storyboard artist and writer on The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rocko's Modern Life, Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack, among others. His own series, The Loud House, launched on Nickelodeon in 2016 and became a hit. It is set in Royal Woods, a fictional southeastern Michigan town modeled on Royal Oak, with a name that also nods to Huntington Woods; the hero, Lincoln Loud, takes his name from the Royal Oak street where Savino grew up, and the town even shares the 248 area code. In October 2017 Nickelodeon fired Savino after sexual harassment allegations, and the Animation Guild suspended him for a year; he has since turned to writing comics and books.
