The Detroit story
Chris Reed was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on July 7, 1989, to a Japanese mother and an American father, and grew up in Warren Township, New Jersey, with his sisters Cathy and Allison, both ice dancers. Holding Japanese nationality, he skated for Japan: with Cathy he won seven national titles and competed at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics. In June 2015 he formed a new partnership with Kana Muramoto and moved to Canton, in Detroit's western suburbs, to train at the Arctic Edge club under Marina Zueva, Oleg Epstein and Massimo Scali, part of the metro Detroit ice-dance hub that attracted skaters from around the world. The pair won three Japanese titles, bronze at the 2018 Four Continents Championships and a place at the 2018 Olympics. Reed died of sudden cardiac arrest in Detroit on March 14, 2020, at 30; his memorial service in Michigan was streamed worldwide.
