The Detroit story
Charles Gilchrist Adams was born in Detroit in 1936 and grew up in the city's Black Baptist tradition. After theological training he was called in 1969 to Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, the congregation long led by the civil rights pastor Charles A. Hill, and he stayed for half a century, until 2019. Under his leadership Hartford became one of Detroit's largest and most influential churches, known for powerful preaching, social outreach and economic development on the city's northwest side, and Adams became a nationally sought-after preacher, nicknamed by some the Harvard Hurricane for the force of his sermons. He was active in civil rights and civic life and served in leadership roles in national Baptist bodies. From 2007 to 2012 he was the first Nickerson Professor of the Practice of Ethics and Ministry at Harvard Divinity School, commuting between Cambridge and his Detroit pulpit. He died in 2023 at the age of 86.
