The Detroit story
Parris Fluellen was born and raised in Detroit, attended Cass Technical High School and took acting classes at Michigan State University. As Cha Cha she made guest appearances on the Hav Plenty soundtrack and on records by Shae Jones and Tash, which led to a contract with Epic Records. Her debut album Dear Diary (1999) featured Nas and Juvenile, and its single “New Millennium (What Cha Wanna Do)” reached No. 28 on the rap chart, making her one of the few Detroit women rappers with a major-label album in the 1990s. She then worked closely with fellow Detroiter Royce da 5'9″, appearing on his mixtapes Build and Destroy and M.I.C. (Make It Count) and his album Death Is Certain (2004). Moving into acting, she appeared on MTV's The Lyricist Lounge Show, in the series Meet the Browns and Let's Stay Together and in films such as Stomp the Yard: Homecoming, and she has worked as an on-air personality for Clear Channel and Radio One.
