The Detroit story
Detroit traded for Arroyo in January 2005 to add playmaking depth to a defending-champion roster, and he became a reliable backup point guard down the stretch and into that spring's playoffs. In the 2005 NBA Finals, dubbed by some Spanish-language outlets the 'Hispanic NBA Finals' because Arroyo faced fellow countryman Manu Ginóbili's Argentine teammates on San Antonio, he came within a single game of becoming just the third Puerto Rican to win an NBA title, as the Spurs won Game 7 on Detroit's home floor. Under new coach Flip Saunders the next season he earned more playing time before Detroit traded him to Orlando in February 2006, part of the deal that also sent Darko Miličić away.
