The Detroit story
Rust was born in Pontiac, Michigan, and grew up rooting for the Red Wings, naming Martin Lapointe his favorite player as a boy. He trained with the Detroit Honeybaked youth club before heading to Notre Dame and, eventually, the NHL, where the Penguins drafted him. He has spent his career mostly with Pittsburgh, winning the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017 and becoming one of the longest-tenured Penguins outside the team's core stars. In January 2020, fittingly, he scored his first career 20-goal-season marker in a game against his hometown Red Wings.
