The Detroit story
Already a five-time 50-goal scorer and former MVP with St. Louis and a Stanley Cup champion with Dallas, Hull turned down bigger offers from Montreal and New York to sign with the Red Wings in 2001, betting on a deep roster built to win now. He switched to jersey No. 17 out of respect for Vladimir Konstantinov, whose No. 16 had gone unworn since a limousine accident ended his career days after Detroit's 1997 championship. Hull scored 30 goals in the 2001–02 regular season as the Red Wings won the Presidents' Trophy, then led the playoffs with 10 goals, including three in the Western Conference finals sweep of Colorado, before Detroit beat Carolina for the Stanley Cup, his second championship. He stayed with Detroit through the 2003–04 season, ranking fifth all-time in NHL goals when he retired.
