The Detroit story
Shanahan arrived in Detroit in October 1996 in a trade that sent away veteran defenseman Paul Coffey, and his physical, goal-scoring style fit perfectly alongside Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov. In his first season he helped the Red Wings win the 1997 Stanley Cup, the franchise's first title in 42 years, and he added two more championships in 1998 and 2002, becoming a core piece of one of the most talented rosters in NHL history. He led the league in power-play goals in 1997 and made eight NHL All-Star Game appearances, seven of them as a Red Wing. Off the ice he was known for his humanitarian work, winning the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2003. After nine seasons in Detroit he left for the New York Rangers in 2006, later saying that if he had to choose one team's cap for the Hall of Fame, it would be the Red Wings'. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013 and later became president of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
