The Detroit story
Calgary traded Brad McCrimmon, already a Stanley Cup champion and All-Star from his years with the Flames, to the Red Wings in June 1990 in exchange for a draft pick. He played one season on Detroit's blue line before a further trade sent him to Hartford in 1993. McCrimmon later turned to coaching, and in 2008 the Red Wings brought him back as an assistant on Mike Babcock's staff, a role he held for three seasons. In May 2011 he left Detroit to become head coach of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in Russia's top league, but he never coached a game: the team's plane crashed on September 7, 2011, on the way to the season opener, killing McCrimmon and nearly the entire roster.
