The Detroit story
James Jones III was born in Atlanta, but his parents brought him home to Detroit in 1983 after his father, a police officer, was wounded on duty. He lived first on the east side with his grandmother, and from 1989 with his father on the west side, on a block near McNichols Road and the Southfield Freeway. He attended Cooley High School but dropped out in his first year. He took his stage name from a neighborhood friend nicknamed Boldy, and kept it after the friend was killed. His national break came in 2009 on mixtapes by the Chicago duo The Cool Kids, and his debut album, My 1st Chemistry Set (2013), was produced by the Alchemist. Their reunion on The Price of Tea in China (2020) brought wide acclaim, as did Manger on McNichols (2020), a jazz-infused collaboration with Detroit producer Sterling Toles named after his old street. Signed to Buffalo's Griselda, he releases several projects a year.
