The Detroit story
Muncey grew up in the Detroit suburbs and graduated from Royal Oak High School. The Detroit River, home of the Gold Cup and the Harmsworth Trophy races, was the center of American powerboat racing in his youth, and he began his own career there in 1949, memorably by sinking his boat in front of a hometown crowd. He went on to become the most successful driver in the history of unlimited hydroplane racing, winning 62 races, a record that stood until 2011, and eight Gold Cups, with boats such as Miss Thriftway and later the Atlas Van Lines entries he owned himself. Fearless and meticulous, he was called "Mr. Unlimited". He was killed in October 1981 when his boat flipped during the world championship race in Acapulco, Mexico. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1989 and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2004.
