The Detroit story
Austin Nichols was born in Ann Arbor on April 24, 1980, but his family moved to Austin, Texas, before he turned one, so his link to the Detroit region is his birthplace in the university city west of Detroit. He grew up in Texas, played competitive sports as a young man and then turned to acting. Hollywood noticed him in the disaster film The Day After Tomorrow and the tennis romance Wimbledon, both released in 2004. On television he starred as the mysterious surfer John Monad in HBO's John from Cincinnati, became a fan favorite as the film producer Julian Baker on The CW's One Tree Hill, where he also directed episodes, and joined AMC's The Walking Dead as Spencer Monroe.
