Thompson and his twin brother Amen both skipped college to play for Overtime Elite, a basketball development league, where Ausar won back-to-back titles, two Finals MVP awards and the league MVP in 2023 before entering the NBA draft together. Detroit selected him fifth overall, one pick after Amen went to Houston, and he quickly established himself as an elite perimeter defender for a Pistons team working to rebuild. During the 2025–26 season he earned a more regular starting role, led the NBA in steals and was named to the All-Defensive First Team, becoming one of the building blocks of Detroit's young roster.
