The Detroit story
Detroit drafted Mantha 20th overall in 2013 and signed him to an entry-level contract that October. He worked his way up through the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's minor-league affiliate, becoming the franchise's second-highest draft pick ever to play for the Griffins, before making his NHL debut with the Red Wings in March 2016. He developed into one of Detroit's top forwards through the late 2010s, highlighted by an October 2019 home opener in which he scored four goals, including a natural hat trick, against the Dallas Stars. In November 2020 the Red Wings signed him to a four-year, $22.8 million contract, but he was traded to the Washington Capitals the following spring after roughly five NHL seasons in Detroit.
