The Detroit story
Anne Fletcher was born in Detroit in 1966 and grew up in the lakefront suburb of St. Clair Shores. At twelve, after watching her mother take a class, she began lessons at a local studio, the Turning Point School of the Performing Arts, and at fifteen she was already on stage in Salute to the Superstars, a revue at the Mr. F's Beef & Bourbon dinner club in Sterling Heights, long since closed. She graduated with honors from Lake Shore High School in 1984 and moved straight to Los Angeles, where she trained with choreographer Joe Tremaine and danced professionally, including as a Laker Girl. She became a sought-after film choreographer, with credits such as Boogie Nights, and then turned director with the dance drama Step Up (2006). Her later films include 27 Dresses, The Proposal with Sandra Bullock, The Guilt Trip, Dumplin' and Disney's Hocus Pocus 2 (2022).
