The Detroit story
Andy Levin was born in 1960 into metro Detroit's best-known political family and grew up in Berkley, in southern Oakland County, the son of Congressman Sander Levin and nephew of Senator Carl Levin. After studies at Williams College, the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School, where he was an activist on labor and diversity causes, he spent five years organizing nursing-home workers with the Service Employees International Union and later served as assistant director of organizing at the national AFL-CIO. He returned home to Michigan in 2006 and, after a run for the state Senate, joined state government during the auto industry's collapse, creating and running the 'No Worker Left Behind' program that sent more than 160,000 unemployed and underemployed Michiganders back to school for certificates and degrees. He later founded a clean-energy company. In 2018 he won his retiring father's seat, representing Macomb and Oakland county suburbs, and served until 2023, when redistricting pitted him against Haley Stevens and he lost the primary.
