The Detroit story
Bathgate had already built his reputation as one of the NHL's top scorers with the New York Rangers when Toronto traded him to Detroit in May 1965, sending Marcel Pronovost and three other players to the Maple Leafs in return. He played the final stretch of his career's prime with the Red Wings at Olympia Stadium before being dealt to Pittsburgh. Though his time in Detroit was brief compared with his years in New York and Toronto, it came during the twilight of one of the era's most respected scorers, a player later named in 2017 to the NHL's list of the 100 greatest players in history.
