The Detroit story
Feustel was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1965 but grew up in Lake Orion in northern Oakland County, graduating from Lake Orion High School in 1983. He earned an associate degree at Oakland Community College in 1985, working at the same time as an auto mechanic at a Farmington Hills shop that restored 1950s Jaguars, and spent summers as a glazier. He went on to Purdue University and to a doctorate in seismology at Queen's University in Ontario, and worked as a geophysicist before NASA selected him in 2000. On his first flight, STS-125 in May 2009, he made three spacewalks during the last servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2011 he flew on Endeavour's final mission, STS-134, which delivered Samuel Ting's Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the space station, and in 2018 he returned aboard Soyuz MS-08 and commanded Expedition 56.
