The Detroit story
Adam Maida, the son of Polish immigrants from western Pennsylvania, was ordained for the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1956, trained in both canon and civil law, and served as bishop of Green Bay from 1984. On April 28, 1990, Pope John Paul II named him the fourth archbishop of Detroit, and four years later a cardinal. His nearly two decades in Detroit were marked by the continuing shift of Catholics from the city to the suburbs: he oversaw parish mergers, the renovation of the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the consolidation of Catholic schools, and he championed the Cornerstone Schools, a partnership to keep quality education in the city. Maida also led the effort to build the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. He ordained a generation of Detroit priests, among them the future Archbishop Michael Byrnes. After Allen Vigneron's installation in January 2009, Maida stayed on as apostolic administrator for the transition and then retired in the Detroit area.
