Detroit's coffee map is now packed with small roasters, market cafés and downtown coffee bars. This Saturday starts in the North End, runs through two Eastern Market roasters into downtown, and ends at a hi-fi listening café in Mexicantown. Order small: there are seven stops' worth of coffee ahead.

Saturday

  1. 08:00

    Sepia Coffee Project

    North End

Start in the North End: Sepia Coffee Project is a small boutique roastery on East Grand Boulevard on a mission to make quality coffee accessible at fair prices, especially in underserved neighborhoods. Its collections are named for Detroit's historic Black neighborhoods: PARADISE, BLK BOTTOM and Harmonie honor Paradise Valley, Black Bottom and Harmonie Park.

About 10 minutes by car south to Division Street in Eastern Market.

  2. 09:15

    Anthology Coffee

    Eastern Market

Anthology got its start in 2012 in Corktown's Ponyride incubator and since 2019 has roasted in a 2,900-square-foot former industrial space on Division Street with tall brick walls. A 6-kilo Mill City roaster works in the back, an 18-foot custom bar runs up front, and garage doors open onto a patio; expect single-origin pour-overs and espresso with Saturday market bustle outside.

An 8-minute walk to Russell Street.

  3. 10:15

Germack Pistachio & Coffee Roasting Co.

    Eastern Market

Germack has roasted pistachios here since 1924 (the first in America, the company says) and small-batch coffee since 2010. On Russell Street the nut store sits next to an espresso bar and a tea and spice shop, so take a bag of warm pistachios along with your cup.

About 5 minutes by car downtown to Woodward Avenue.

  4. 11:30

    Avalon Woodward

    Downtown

Avalon International Breads pulled its first loaves in the Cass Corridor in June 1997, baking with organic flour, and the Woodward café brings that bakery downtown with fresh bread, pastries and coffee. If you try one thing, make it the chocolate chunk cookie with flaky sea salt; open daily 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A 3-minute walk south on Woodward to the First National Building.

  5. 12:30

Roasting Plant Coffee (Detroit First National)

    Downtown

Roasting Plant started on Manhattan's Lower East Side, and at its Detroit café the Javabot roasts beans on site in micro-batches of three pounds or less and brews every cup to order. It's on the ground floor of the First National Building on Campus Martius, open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.

A 5-minute walk to Capitol Park.

  6. 14:00

    Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters Detroit

    Capitol Park

Dessert Oasis started in Rochester in 2009 as a family business built on desserts and live music; today it roasts every bean at its own HQ, and its Detroit café has anchored the Capitol Park Historic District since 2015. Think cortados, lattes, batch brew and rotating single-origin pour-overs, with a slice of the signature cheesecake.

About 10 minutes by car southwest to Bagley Street in Mexicantown.

  7. 16:30

    Tigris

    Southwest Detroit (Bagley St)

End on a high note: Tigris, opened in June 2026, is a café by day, and at 5 p.m. the Sound Room opens with a custom audiophile system, a deep vinyl collection, Middle Eastern-inspired cocktails and guest DJs. Metro Times staff picked it as 2026's Best New Place to Get Lost in the Music.
