In Detroit, art doesn't stay inside museum walls: it spills into alleys, yards and the sides of apartment buildings. Saturday takes you from Midtown's big institutions to a West Side bead museum, Sunday from East Side legends to the murals of Southwest Detroit. By the end you'll get why this city runs on makers.

Saturday: Midtown and the West Side

  1. 10:00

    Detroit Institute of Arts

    Midtown

Start at the top: Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry murals wrap around Rivera Court, and the collection runs from the ancient world to African, Asian, American and European art. Give it at least two to three hours.

A few minutes' walk to Farnsworth Street, right behind the DIA.

  2. 12:45

    Scarab Club

    Midtown (Cultural Center)

An artists' club and gallery since 1913, tucked right behind the DIA. The clubhouse beams carry signatures of visiting artists, and with luck you'll catch a chamber concert or a recital on its 1870s French Pleyel piano.

A short walk south to Cass Avenue and Forest Avenue.

  3. 13:30

Josephine Harreld Love and Dell Pryor mural

    Detroit – Midtown

Ijania Cortez's mural, unveiled in 2022, honors two matriarchs of Detroit's Black art scene: pianist Josephine Harreld Love, who founded Your Heritage House, and gallery owner Dell Pryor. Free to see from the street any time.

A few minutes' walk east to Woodward Avenue.

  4. 14:00

    Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

    Midtown

Contemporary art in a former car dealership: open since 2006, the museum runs on rotating shows, music and talks. Look for Mike Kelley's Mobile Homestead too.

A short drive west to Trumbull Avenue, across from Wayne State.

  5. 15:15

“Sixto Rodriguez: Laborer and Poet” mural

    Detroit – Midtown

Nicole Macdonald's mural on the side of the Iroquois Apartments shows Sixto Rodriguez, the Detroit hero of Searching for Sugar Man. It's a residential building, so view it from the Trumbull Avenue sidewalk.

A short drive northwest to Grand River Avenue.

  6. 15:45

    Dabls MBAD African Bead Museum

    West Side / Grand River

Since 1994, artist Olayami Dabls has been building this outdoor bead museum and sculpture garden from African beads, mirrors and reclaimed materials. You can wander it on your own, but the guided storytelling tour tells you what's behind each piece.

Sunday: East Side and Southwest

  1. 10:00

    Heidelberg Project

    McDougall-Hunt

In 1986 Tyree Guyton started turning East Side houses and yards into art with found objects, and the installations keep changing. It's a living neighborhood, not a museum, so walk and shoot quietly and respectfully.

A short drive east to Jefferson Avenue.

  2. 11:30

    Pewabic Pottery

    East Side

Mary Chase Perry Stratton and Horace James Caulkins founded this still-working pottery in 1903. Once you've seen its iridescent glazes, you'll spot them all over town. A roof restoration is underway, so check what's open before you go.

Drive back downtown, between Broadway and Library Street.

  3. 13:30

    The Belt

    Downtown

Since 2014 Library Street Collective has filled this downtown alley with murals, including work by Nina Chanel Abney, Rosson Crow and Patrick Martinez. Free, no hours, and the pieces keep rotating.

Drive to Southwest Detroit, Vernor Highway at Sharon Street.

  4. 15:00

    Sixto Rodriguez mural, Vernor Highway

    Detroit – Southwest Detroit

End the weekend with a building-sized portrait: Mexican muralist Elton Monroy Durán finished it for Rodriguez's birthday in 2020, in the part of town where the singer grew up. View it from the sidewalk or street any time, free.

Good to know

  • The Dabls MBAD Bead Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m., per our listing, which is why it's on Saturday.
  • Most murals are on residential buildings: look and shoot from the sidewalk, stay out of yards, and don't touch anything at the Heidelberg Project.
  • At Pewabic, shopping and taking a ceramics workshop are two different things; workshops need advance registration.
  • Want your hotel to feel like art too? The Siren Hotel fills the 1926 Wurlitzer Building on Broadway, close to The Belt.
