Detroit takes its beer and cocktails seriously, and the best spots make for a great little crawl. Saturday runs from the Eastern Market breweries to a Corktown cocktail institution and ends in a downtown alley. Sunday hops over to Ferndale for mead, small-batch beer and two excellent cocktail bars.

Saturday: Detroit

  1. 13:00

    Eastern Market Brewing Company

    Eastern Market

A community-minded brewery in the heart of Eastern Market, where the beer comes with pizza, live music, trivia and even a running club. Start with a light beer and a slice while market life buzzes around you.

A few steps along Riopelle Street.

  2. 14:30

    Detroit City Distillery

    Eastern Market

The distillery's Riopelle Street tasting room is its bar, with a cocktail menu that follows the seasons. A drink built on spirits made right here is the perfect follow-up to a market morning.

A few minutes' walk to Orleans Street.

  3. 15:30

    Full Measure Brewing Company

    Eastern Market

Belgian, German and British styles under one roof, with hand-pumped cask ale sometimes on the list. The September lineup included a saison, witbier, pilsner, dunkel and British mild, so grab a flight.

Rideshare to Michigan Avenue in Corktown.

  4. 17:30

    The Sugar House

    Corktown

Shaking cocktails in Corktown since 2011, with classics and seasonal ideas defining the bar. On weekends, check its site for reservation rules first.

A short walk through Corktown to Porter Street.

  5. 19:00

    Batch Brewing Company

    Corktown

A Corktown brewery and taproom pouring beer plus wine, cider, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. The kitchen changes day to day, so if you're planning dinner here, check what's cooking.

Rideshare downtown to The Belt alley.

  6. 21:00

    Standby

    Downtown

A cocktail bar and kitchen inside The Belt's mural-lined alley, entered right from the alley. Reserved tables and walk-in bar seats work differently, so check ahead.

Sunday: Ferndale

  1. 14:00

    B. Nektar Taproom

    Ferndale — Metro Detroit

Founded in Ferndale in 2006 by a husband-and-wife team, it shows off the modern side of mead, alongside cider, beer and non-alcoholic drinks. No full kitchen, but you can bring food.

A short drive or rideshare to Wolcott Street.

  2. 15:30

    Urbanrest Brewing Company

    Ferndale — Metro Detroit

A roomy Ferndale brewery that puts you close to the brewing: small tasting pours, boards with local cheese and meat, rotating food trucks and kombucha. Seating is first come, first served; head to the Wolcott Street brewery, not the downtown branch.

A short drive or rideshare to downtown Ferndale on Nine Mile Road.

  3. 17:30

    The Oakland

    Ferndale — Metro Detroit

A cocktail bar since 2011 with an elegant, nostalgic room, American whiskey and artisan mezcal. It calls itself a neighborhood bar that pairs a serious drinks program with a warm welcome.

A few minutes' walk through downtown Ferndale to Vester Avenue.

  4. 19:00

    Belle's Lounge by Valentine Distilling

    Ferndale — Metro Detroit

Valentine Distilling's cocktail lounge, where every drink is built only on spirits from the nearby distillery. A fitting finale: spirits made down the road, mixed by local hands.

Good to know

  • Don't drive: use rideshare between Detroit neighborhoods, and walk downtown Ferndale.
  • Ask for small pours or flights and drink water along the way; several spots, including Batch and B. Nektar, also pour non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Bring ID, and check each bar's own site for hours, age rules and reservations.
  • You can bring food into B. Nektar but not outside drinks; Detroit City Distillery's Whiskey Factory tour is a separate booking at a different address.
