Russ Macklem’s Detroit Quintet and Session

Russ Macklem showcased his sophomore album with a special concert at Cliff Bell’s in Detroit. The Detroit Quintet—featuring Kasan Belgrave, Jordan Anderson, Noah Jackson, Louis Jones III, and Macklem himself—performed original compositions that echo the jazz of the '60s. The set captured the feel of their studio album, Introducing: the Russ Macklem Detroit Quintet, which was recorded live in a single session at a converted church near Willis, Michigan. The tight setup and eye contact among band members made the performance special, with recording engineers Ron Skinner and Ben Lorenz behind the boards. Jam session musicians enjoyed free admission, adding to the creative atmosphere.
