David Alvarez III started on drums at age five in church and began studying jazz at nine through the Arts League of Michigan’s summer program. He further developed his jazz skills for eight years in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Youth Jazz Program under university mentors. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2017 with a Fine Arts degree in Jazz Studies and teacher certification. Alvarez has toured with the Benny Green Trio and recently joined the Clayton Brothers Quintet. He freelances and teaches music in Southeast Michigan. His performance at Cliff Bell’s offered a chance to hear his distinctive style and jazz expertise.
