The James O’Donnell Trio

James O’Donnell has been entertaining Detroit audiences for years and has toured worldwide, including time living in Mexico City. His trumpet style is marked by swing and humor, influenced by Detroit trumpet legend Johnny Trudell. His first teacher was Carlos B. Rivera, who also taught Curtis Fuller, and he also learned from mentors like Russell Green, Marcus Belgrave, Herbie Williams, Charlie Hooks, and Felton Jones. James is known for using various trumpet mutes such as the plunger and bucket that recall the old swing era’s signature growling sound. At this show, guitarist Matt LoRusso and veteran bassist John Barron joined him at Cliff Bell’s.
