Ruby McCollum was a wealthy Black businesswoman in Live Oak, Florida. In 1952 she shot and killed a prominent white doctor and politician. Her trial exposed deep racial injustice and the power dynamics of the Jim Crow South.

The Pittsburgh Courier and Zora Neale Hurston covered the story in 1952. Real Times Media, which publishes both The Pittsburgh Courier and The Michigan Chronicle, provided archives that helped brothers Nate and Michael Jacobs create the play. The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe in Florida produced an original adaptation.

The run is presented by the Frauenthal Center and wraps up Sunday, March 7.
