Aretha's Jazz Jam

Aretha's Jazz Jam kicks off Sunday, November 1, at 7 p.m. at Aretha's Jazz Café in Music Hall, Detroit. This all-ages, education-minded jam has been a hub for local jazz musicians for about a decade, and there's no cover.

Scott Gwinnell, Music Hall's education director, created and runs the jam. Musicians use it to work on collaboration, communication, improvisation and building repertoire, and to meet other players. You can get help from the house trio of jazz educators or just do your own thing.

Listening is a good night out too. Three hours of music, 7 to 10 p.m., with groups ranging from middle school students to professionals, plus food and drink options.
